Specialist seating is a personalised solution designed to support individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or long‑term needs where standard seating is no longer appropriate. It plays a critical role in maintaining comfort, postural stability and safety, while supporting independence and daily function.

Appropriate specialist seating helps manage posture and pressure, supports safe positioning and reduces risk associated with prolonged sitting. Whether used in healthcare settings, care environments or at home, it enables individuals to sit comfortably and safely while protecting long‑term health.

At CareFlex, our approach to specialist seating is guided by six key principles. These principles address the physical, functional and practical needs of the individual and underpin every design decision we make, ensuring seating solutions that are clinically appropriate, purposeful and built to support quality of life.

Suitable for individuals who are generally stable when sitting and primarily require enhanced comfort, light postural support and straightforward adjustability to support everyday sitting needs.

Appropriate for individuals who require increased postural support to remain comfortable and stable over longer periods of sitting. Seating should allow accessible adjustment to enable regular changes in position throughout the day, supporting comfort, fatigue management and functional needs.

Designed for individuals with significant postural instability who are unable to maintain a safe or functional sitting position without substantial support. This includes those prone to sliding, leaning or collapsing in the chair and who require a high level of adjustability to maintain alignment, comfort and safety.

Used when standard and complex seating solutions are no longer sufficient. Appropriate for individuals with severe or fluctuating needs, including very limited or uncontrolled movement, rapidly changing presentation, prolonged bed‑based care, or significant difficulty with transfers. Seating typically requires highly specialised design and configuration to support safety, positioning and care needs.
